Events and festivals:

Festivals are an important way for us to bring ideas and experiences to you! Scroll down for descriptions & links to all our festivals! We also participate in other community events.

Pacific Rim Whale Festival

March 17-25, 2012
Every year, our communities celebrate the spring migration of Pacific Grey Whales travelling northward along the west coast of Vancouver Island with whale watching, slideshows and presentations, hiking, art shows, seafood chowder, singing, dancing, storytelling, films, a parade and much more! The Raincoast Education Society is a proud participant in the Pacific Rim Whale Festival. www.pacificrimwhalefestival.com

Tofino Earth Day

Earth Day is a grassroots global movement that occurs every April 22 to raise awareness about environmental issues. It's only event celebrated simultaneously around the globe by people of all backgrounds, faiths and nationalities! In Tofino, a number of events and festivities take place during the weekend of Earth Day (or the weekend just before or after if Earth Day occurs on a weekday). The Raincoast Education Society is a proud participant in Earth Day

Tofino Shorebird Festival

May 4 to 6 2012
Every year from late April through May, flocks of sandpipers, plovers, whimbrels, and many other shorebirds pass through the Tofino area. The combination of expansive mudflats and long sandy beaches create an ideal habitat for these migratory shorebirds. Thousands of shorebirds stop here stop to feed and rest – some for just three days – as they make their impressive journey from South and Central America northward to their Arctic breeding grounds. The Tofino Shorebird Festival is a weekend of walks, talks, guided birding and more.

Shorebird Brunch

To be announced. Join Raincoast Education Society board members and supporters for a scrumptious brunch. All ticket sales from this event are donated to the RES!

Tofino Lantern Festival

7:00 pm to 10:30 pm Sunday, August 26th, 2012
Tofino Botanical Gardens

Held at the Tofino Botanical Gardens in late August each year, the Tofino Lantern Festival is our 'signature' community event and fundraiser, drawing the young and old with an unbelievable variety of hand made lanterns. Don't miss out on the magic! During the week leading up to the Festival, we hold lantern-making workshops so you can create your own original lantern.

How Can You Get Involved?

  1. Bring a Lantern! Make a paper lantern to bring to the festival (see workshop details below)! If you’re just coming in to town that weekend, don’t worry, we do have simple lanterns for sale at the festival.
  2. Kids – join the Lantern and Costume Parade! Children are encouraged to arrive early and gather in the Children’s Pavilion in the gardens between 7:00 and 7:30 pm. At 7:30 pm, we’ll parade through the gardens in front of all the adoring fans!
  3. Volunteer! We need lots of help setting up during the day, as well as with ticket sales, lantern lighting and other jobs during the festival.
  4. Wear a costume! Anything goes, but magical wizards, warlocks, witches, fairies, and tree nymphs are popular themes!
  5. Tell all your friends to come out in support of the Raincoast Education Society!
